What is Linux KVM?

KVM stands for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and is a module that allows virtual machines to run under a Linux host. It takes advantage of special instructions in modern processors to provide near-native performance in a fully virtualized environment.

KVM is a relatively new technology but is stable and is included in the mainline Linux kernel. In many ways it is similar to Xen and often outperforms it. KVM gives you the same experience as a real physical server, and allows you the opportunity to run your own custom Linux kernel and modules.

KVM's memory also behaves in the familiar way. On a default setup we create a swap partition (2 x RAM) on your virtual hard drive.

We will set up your VPS with any of the operating systems listed on this page but you can install another OS at any time.

Guaranteed Memory

We do not over-subscribe our memory, we ensure there is enough physical RAM to cover the guaranteed memory for every running unit.

Swap Space

We provide you with disk swap space in a separate partition, for times when your system is under peak load and requires more memory than the basic amount of RAM. This can degrade performance but allows you peace of mind that your system is unlikely to run out of memory. You should choose a plan with enough RAM to cover your normal usage, and swap should only occasionally be needed.

Swap space is taken out of the total disk space allocation. 2 x RAM is considered a fairly standard amount of swap to have, but we can set aside more or less swap space if you would prefer.

Disk Space

We measure disk space in true SI gigabytes, as is standard practice with hard drive equipment. So with a 15GB allocation, you get 15,000,000,000 bytes.

Stay Connected

When trying to create a successful site the last thing you want to worry about is being too successful. Similarly offsite backups are useless if you are too constrained by your traffic limit to actually use them. This is why we operate a traffic policy designed to keep you connected, and with no additional data fees.

The traffic limit that comes as part of each plan is the total amount of data per month that can be sent or received using all the available bandwidth. Should this limit be reached the connection will be automatically throttled to 128kbit/s for the rest of the month. This way you never lose connectivity, and you never get an unexpected bill.

IP Addresses

By default, we give out one IP address per server since this is adequate for most purposes and IP addresses are a scarce resource. However, you can order more.

If you decide later on that you would like to use more IP addresses than originally planned we can usually accommodate this, however, it may be necessary to restart your server.

Please note that as a provider we have a responsibility to conserve IPv4 space. If you are requesting more than one IP address per VPS, you must supply a reasonable justification for doing so.
